Northern Lights Tonight

For those interested, this is the current extent and position of the auroral oval over the Northern Hemisphere - yellow and red over your location means a good chance of Northern Lights! Click for detailed image - Canada and Northern United States are at the bottom of the picture.

Full screen picture view

There is a new cool feature available for better viewing of photographs. If you click on any photo, it will be displayed on a dark background and you can navigate between photos of each post with left and right arrows. For better viewing, you can also go fullscreen with F11 key. Enjoy.

Sunspots

I snapped this picture this morning, with my ordinary camera through a light fog - after I have seen the huge sunspot with the naked eye. The black spot close to the center of the sun disc - a huge magnetic storm on the surface of the sun, is about 13 times larger than the whole Earth. Apparently, people in the distant past were very puzzled to see sunspots through the fog or haze from forest fires - after all, the Sun was supposed to be spotless!

Expect some Northern Lights in the next few days!
